Hotwell Dunes

Soak in the Sand Dunes

Deep in the San Simon Valley of southeastern Arizona, Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area offers one of the state’s most unique desert experiences: the chance to ride massive sand dunes and then soak in natural artesian hot tubs in the same location.

This 2,000-acre “beach” was formed two million years ago when a prehistoric lake dried up. It is now an off-highway vehicle (OHV) paradise where sand rails, ATVs, and dirt bikes can roam freely within the fenced boundary.

Discovered by oil drillers in the 1920s, geothermally heated water (106°F) is pumped by solar power into two concrete soaking tubs. Because the pumps are solar-powered, the tubs are typically full from an hour after sunrise until an hour before sunset. Public nudity is strictly prohibited, and visitors should be aware that the high water temperature can be a risk for certain medical conditions.

A recreation fee of $3.00 per vehicle per day is required (payable via self-pay envelopes). Senior or Disabled National Park passes may reduce this to $1.50. There are 10 developed campsites with fire rings, picnic tables, and shade awnings. Stays are limited to 14 days.

This is a remote area with no potable water and no nearby stores. Bring at least two gallons of water per person per day.
