Soak in the Sand Dunes
Deep in the San Simon Valley of southeastern Arizona, Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area offers one of the state’s most unique desert experiences: the chance to ride massive sand dunes and then soak in natural artesian hot tubs in the same location.

This 2,000-acre “beach” was formed two million years ago when a prehistoric lake dried up. It is now an off-highway vehicle (OHV) paradise where sand rails, ATVs, and dirt bikes can roam freely within the fenced boundary.

Discovered by oil drillers in the 1920s, geothermally heated water (106°F) is pumped by solar power into two concrete soaking tubs. Because the pumps are solar-powered, the tubs are typically full from an hour after sunrise until an hour before sunset. Public nudity is strictly prohibited, and visitors should be aware that the high water temperature can be a risk for certain medical conditions.

A recreation fee of $3.00 per vehicle per day is required (payable via self-pay envelopes). Senior or Disabled National Park passes may reduce this to $1.50. There are 10 developed campsites with fire rings, picnic tables, and shade awnings. Stays are limited to 14 days.

This is a remote area with no potable water and no nearby stores. Bring at least two gallons of water per person per day.
Know Before You Go:
- Location: Approximately 35 miles southeast of Safford, AZ. The access roads (such as Haekel Road) can be rough and washboarded; a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended.
- Essential Supplies: Bring at least two gallons of water per person per day and your own firewood.
- Best Time to Visit: Fall, winter, and spring are ideal. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F, and weekends can be very loud due to OHV traffic.
- Primitive Stays: There are 10 developed campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis, each equipped with a fire grill and picnic table.
- No Hookups: This is dry camping only—there is no drinking water, electricity, or trash collection. You must “Pack It In, Pack It Out”.
- Cost: Access and camping cost $3.00 per vehicle per day (cash only, exact amount via self-pay envelopes). Holders of a National Park Pass may receive a discount.
- Open Riding: All types of vehicles (ATVs, dirt bikes, sand rails, 4WD trucks) are welcome to ride anywhere within the fenced 2,000-acre boundary.
- Safety Requirements: All OHVs must display a safety flag (orange or red, at least 6×12 inches, mounted 8 feet high). A valid Arizona OHV Decal is also required.
- Terrain: Expect a mix of low, vegetated dunes and larger, challenging hills. Watch for steep drop-offs before cresting dunes.
