The Best Seat in the Alley
On the historic Subway Street in Old Bisbee, Allen & Co Coffee Shop (also known as the Allen & Co. Espresso House) has quickly become a community cornerstone since opening in late 2024. Occupying the same iconic space where Kafka once stood, owners John and Kelsey Allen have infused the 115-year-old Allen Block building with a “90s soul” that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.

John and Kelsey Allen, professional photographers who traveled through 29 states before returning to their Bisbee roots, have transformed the shop into a visual and sensory retreat. The walls are adorned with local artwork and antique cameras, and the atmosphere is described by regulars as “intimate, personal, and high-vibration”.
One of the most unique features of the shop is its commitment to local makers. Coffee is served in one-of-a-kind ceramic mugs handcrafted by local Bisbee artists. If you fall in love with the mug you’re using, you can purchase it—and 100% of the sale goes directly back to the artist.

The menu is as creative as the decor, featuring house-made syrups and locally sourced beans. The Lavender Latte is a standout favorite known for its delicate floral notes. Unique flavors like Rosemary Honey Pink Sea Salt elevate standard espresso drinks. Patrons rave about the Avocado Toast and creative bagel combinations.

Beyond caffeine, Allen & Co is explicitly designed as a inclusive gathering spot. It is recognized as an LGBTQ+ and transgender-safe space where locals often meet to study, work, or discuss life changes—from graduations to new homes.
Things to Know:
- The Temporal Window: The facility observes a strictly disciplined daily cycle: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, seven days a week. It is one of the few morning terminals operational in the early hours.
- The “Slow-Motion” Variable: While service is noted for its warmth, the production cycle can be slow during peak weekend hours. This is a space for unwinding, not for high-velocity commuters.
- The Biological Integration: The facility is explicitly dog-friendly, permitting canine companions both inside and on the small outdoor patio.
- The Fiscal Exchange: Fully modernized; the facility accepts credit cards, debit cards, and NFC mobile payments.
- The Social Geometry: A dedicated LGBTQ+ and transgender safe space that often hosts live music and performances, reinforcing its role as a communal sanctuary.
- Navigational Coordinate: 31 Subway St #3, positioned in an “adorable alley” just off the main thoroughfare of Old Bisbee.
