Salvador Dalí of the High Desert
Bill Mead is a prominent contemporary muralist and painter based in Bisbee, Arizona, known for a signature style often described as “Lowcountry Surrealism”.

Born in 1954, Mead initially studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Atlanta College of Art. His early career was spent as a carpenter in South Carolina while painting in his spare time.

His professional art career began serendipitously in 2005 after he painted a watermelon sign for a friend’s vegetable stand. The sign was immediately purchased by a passerby, leading Mead to realize the commercial potential of his work and eventually transition to painting full-time.

His style blends realistic landscapes with fantastical, strangely placed elements—such as floating objects or incongruous still-life arrangements—intended to capture the “paradoxical dichotomy of being human”.
