Gene’s Place

Pickles, Pints, and Pride

In the winding, storied streets of Bisbee’s Brewery Gulch, Gene’s Place stands as a revived landmark of Southern Arizona’s past. Originally established in 1948, this iconic neighborhood bar was dormant for decades before its grand reopening in 2023 by new owners Alex and Katie Mastrangelo.

The 2026 experience at Gene’s is defined by a “quintessential American bar” atmosphere that blends kitschy dive charm with historic preservation.

The intimate interior features vintage furniture, eclectic artwork, and a still-functioning TV from 1957.

It has gained modern fame for serving what locals call the “best grilled cheese-and-pickle sandwich” in Cochise County.

Known for a strong craft cocktail menu, signature items include the “pickle-tini” and fresh-squeezed fruit virgin margaritas.

Gene’s Place is a central hub for Bisbee’s vibrant arts scene, frequently hosting live music and local bands. It is the sister establishment to the Hitching Post Saloon in Bisbee’s Bakerville neighborhood.

Long before Bisbee became known as a sanctuary for diverse lifestyles, Gene’s Place held a “quiet reputation” during the mid-20th century as a safe haven where gay men could socialize without judgment. Today, that legacy of hospitality continues, with the bar officially recognized as an LGBTQ-friendly and transgender-safe space.
