Weird, Wild, and Wonderful
Burnerella is a free-spirited, annual arts takeover in Bisbee, Arizona, loosely inspired by the radical self-expression and community-focused principles of Burning Man. Hosted primarily at the Jonquil Motel and its “JonqYard,” the festival transforms the town into a “temporary village” of art cars, surreal installations, and diverse creative performances.

Founded by members of the “Burner” community, the festival is designed as a “corrective to society” by reclaiming public “third spaces” for communal gathering.

Following Burning Man principles, participants are encouraged to be active creators rather than passive observers. Organizers describe it as a “fever dream” of creativity that complements the more whimsical “daydream” vibe of the concurrent Alice in Bisbeeland Festival.

The backyard of the Jonquil Motel serves as the main hub for “activations,” featuring fire performers, art installations, and wellness sessions such as sound baths and yoga. Mobile sculptures and themed camps are a staple of the weekend, often accompanied by live DJs and experimental music.

Burnerella typically partners with the Mile High Music Festival, offering live music stages at the Jonquil Motel and other local venues.
Essential Logistics:
- When: Annually in the spring (typically late March or April). The 2026 event is expected to draw a significant crowd of regional artists and travelers.
- Location: Usually held at the Jonquil Motel which provides enough space for large art cars and outdoor stages.
- Self-Reliance: Bring your own water, sunscreen, and essentials. While there are often food trucks nearby, the “Burner” ethos encourages you to be prepared for the desert environment.
- Volunteer-Run: The entire event is produced by the community. If you want the full experience, consider signing up for a volunteer shift to help build or strike the event.
- Family Friendly (During the Day): Daytime hours are often more relaxed and suitable for families, while the late-night festivities lean into a more “adult” party atmosphere.
